Ruth Hazleton brings her latest darkfolk album project Heronbones to the stage, featuring Naarm instrumentalist & producer Dan West on live electronics + beats and pieces.

Heronbones is a collection of stories (both traditional and composed), told through soundscape and word. Drawing from deep wells of folklore and trad song, Hazleton reshapes these narratives through a darkfolk lens, blending electronic sampling and sound design with guitar and banjo. The album and project realises an artistic vision seeded many years ago, inspired by 90s downbeat, electronica and triphop.

A Naarm/Melbourne-based singer, banjo player, guitarist and songwriter, Hazleton has remained a prominent figure in Australia’s folk music scene for over 30 years and was awarded ‘Artist of the Year’ at the 2021 Australian Folk Music Awards. Ruth began her solo journey in 2019, releasing Daisywheel – nominated for ‘Best Folk Album 2020’ at the Music Victoria Awards and described as “…compelling and intimately fierce” (Living Tradition – UK).

“Ruth Hazleton doesn’t just interpret folk traditions – she inhabits them… What makes [her music] most compelling is her ability to hold tradition and transformation in the same hand… one of the most vital, visionary artists working in folk music today’. ~ Stevie Connor, Sound Café (Canada)

Ruth Hazleton has the rare gift to make the new sound old and the old sound new. Past and present flow together through her stunning vocal delivery of these fine songs.
