Ruth Hazleton brings her darkfolk album project Heronbones to the stage, featuring Naarm instrumentalist & producer Dan West on guitar, live electronics, beats and pieces, and Lostii on synths & vocals.
Heronbones is a collection of stories (both traditional and composed), told through soundscape. Drawing from deep wells of folklore and trad song, Hazleton reshapes these narratives through a darkfolk lens, blending electronic sampling and sound design with guitar and banjo. The project realises an artistic vision seeded many years ago, inspired by 90s downbeat, electronica and triphop.
A Naarm/Melbourne-based singer, banjo player, guitarist and songwriter, Hazleton has remained a prominent figure in Australia’s folk music scene for over 30 years and was awarded ‘Artist of the Year’ at the 2021 Australian Folk Music Awards.Special Guests: Lotus Threads is a poetry and music project by poet Panda Wong and musician Hannah Wu (electronics and Guzheng). Joined by harpist/instrumentalist Genevieve Fry, Lotus Threads explore collaboration and the links between music and spoken word.

Award-winning folk artist Ruth Hazleton presents the live realisation of Heronbones, her mesmerising darkfolk album. The stage show features producer Dan West providing guitar, beats, and electronic elements, with Lostii rounding out the sound on synths and vocals.
Blending deep traditional folklore with heavy influences from 90s trip-hop and electronica, Heronbones is an ambitious sonic journey years in the making. Hazleton pairs her acoustic banjo and guitar skills with cutting-edge sound design to tell rich stories through cinematic soundscapes.
A central figure in the Australian folk scene for over 30 years, Ruth cemented her legacy by winning ‘Artist of the Year’ at the 2021 Australian Folk Music Awards. Heronbones is a true “passion project” for Ruth, years in the making and we are truly privileged to have her present this material live for us as part of our Storytellers series.Ruth will also. in her own words “likely do some solo pieces without the whizbangery too!”
